Excessive noise, whether through conversations behind a wall or from nearby traffic or other sources, is not only an annoyance to the occupants of many buildings located in urban areas, but studies have found that continuous exposure to noise during the workday may increase the likelihood of developing hypertension. It’s safe to say that sound control in buildings has wide-reaching benefits. To reduce sound transmissions, Thermolite developed our SoundWAL™ interior curtain wall retrofit system.
In March 2014, an AAMA 1801 Sound Transmission Loss Test was conducted on the RetroWAL™ Silver Two-Lite Curtainwall system to test for air leakage and sound transmission loss.
- A non-thermally broken curtain wall with ¼” glass has an STC of 31 and an OITC of 28.
- This same system with RetroWAL™ Silver placed behind the existing lite of glass improves the STC to 43 and the OITC to 33.
During the testing, we were informed of four additional improvements that could enable Thermolite to make. We’re going to attempt to replicate our historic window testing to reach a STC level of 49.

In addition to its proven performance, RetroWAL™ is the first DIY curtain wall retrofit system. It is placed on the inside of existing windows and quickly and easily seals the source of air leakage that contributes to excess noise coming into the building. Since RetroWAL™ does not require removal of existing windows, it is much more affordable and can installed more quickly than traditional replacement window systems.
